Implementing and Sustaining Work Redesign

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Implementing and sustaining work redesign concerns how organizations sustain job redesign efforts over the longer term. However, much of the research literature on job redesign concentrates on discrete interventions that are relatively time limited. Drawing primarily on studies focused on implementing job redesign interventions targeted at worker health and well-being, the chapter first draws attention to the factors that can sustain job redesign over the shorter term. Then, the focus is widened to examine how discrete job redesign interventions connect with the wider organizational environment and how job redesign may evolve within the context of changing organizational environments. Further, the chapter examines how job redesign may be encouraged across multiple organizations, in the forms of industrial guidance/policies and placed-based initiatives in specific locations. The chapter concludes by considering the implications of a longer-term perspective on job redesign for research methods.
