Abstract

This book project supported by the Japanese Research Council aimed to reconstruct the concept of 'Bijutsu' (art) in Japan. Within the Japanese debate on this topic, there is a tendency to see the Western notion of 'art' in a monolithic and in purely fine art terms. This essay counters this by showing how volatile the definition of 'art' was in Britain during the second half of the nineteenth century and that Japanese art played an active role in defining what is art during this period in the form of Japonisme.
