Abstract
The book is based on the outcomes of interviews with 118 teachers across 80 schools in England. The book argues that contrary to Ofsted claims that discipline is satisfactory or better in over 90% of schools, almost all schools face serious deficits' in terms of the working atmosphere in the classroom, which impact on pupil attainment, and which are a major cause of inequality of educational opportunity in the UK. One of the main instruments used in the research, a ten point scale describing the continuum between ordered and difficult classrooms, has been widely used in schools in the UK, teacher training institutions in a number of countries, and has been widely publicised in the national press (Guardian, Telegraph, Times Educational Supplement). Teacher testimony is used to provide insights into the factors influencing classroom climate, in a form that is useful to trainee and newly qualified teachers.
