Abstract

This book provides an overview the contribution of urban archaeology and of material culture to the history and development of the city of Norwich. The work explores the pre-urban context and progresses through Middle Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian urban origins, fundamental changes brought by the Norman Conquest, the thriving medieval commercial centre, concluding with an overview of post-medieval industrialisation, war-damage and post-war development.
