Abstract

This article aims at presenting the results of an investigation of the academic prose of Brazilian speakers of English. The corpus under study consists of scientific articles in English from the fields of Linguistics and Literature, totaling 169,307 tokens and 5,008 types. Initially, with the help of a computer program called WordSmith Tools (Scott, 1999), a list was created containing the most frequent 4-word lexical bundles in the research corpus. Afterwards, these word sequences were classified both structurally and functionally, according to Biber et alii's (2004) categories. Finally, the results were compared with those obtained by Biber et alii (2004) in their study of the academic prose of native speakers of English. The research findings seem to indicate that either Brazilian researchers are proficient in writing in English or that editors play an important role in shaping final versions of articles to be published.
