Abstract
This chapter discusses the drug opium in the Romantic period. It covers the use of opium by Romantic period writers, such as Thomas De Quincey and S. T. Coleridge and the production and consumption of opium in a British and global context. It also discusses the various, often conflicting, medical discourses about the drug and the development of the modern concept of addiction
