Abstract
Introduction to the Italian translation of a book by Hugh Dalton about his experience as a gunnery officer on the Italian front in the First World War. The introduction presents Dalton to an Italian readership, compares his experiences and account with that of the historian GM Trevelyan (who served with the Red Cross in Italy), and draws on my research in Dalton's private papers.
The Appendix presents my selection of entries from Dalton's war diaries, published here for the first time.
