Abstract
The phone starts ringing. I stare at it for a while as if I can will away the referral by not answering straightaway. ‘Another one for us? Okay – I’m on my way.’ As I head downstairs, I reflect on how busy the shift has been, and how many referrals we have had. I wonder what creative private space the emergency department (ED) staff will find for me to complete my assessment this time, knowing that they are full to bursting.
