Abstract
Recent observations provide evidence that variations in the Northern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex are strongly coupled to similarly signed variations in the tropospheric circulation. Anomalous examination of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) circulation reveals that similar coupling occurs in the SH as well. These results support previous research suggesting that photochemical depletion plays a key role in driving recent climate change both in the SH stratosphere and SH troposphere.
