    Abstract

This chapter discusses the isolation and structure elucidation of a glucoside of 2, 5—hydroxybenzyl alcohol. Most of the glycosides proved to be soluble in ethyl acetate and initial separation was performed by vacuum liquid chromatography, eluting with solvent mixtures of increasing polarity. Subsequent purification to individual compounds was achieved by preparative TLC, centrifugal TLC or semi-preparative HPLC. In the course of an investigation of the Flacourtiaceae for novel metabolites scientists have isolated further glycosides of this type from four species; Poliothrysis sinensis, Xylosma flexuosa, Homalium longifolium, and Scolopia spinosa.
