Abstract

This paper delves into the potential opportunities and challenges of integrating the metaverse into higher education from pedagogic, lecturer, student, and technology perspectives. The metaverse offers a myriad of benefits such as flexibility, personalisation, immersive learning experiences, and global access. However, it also presents hurdles, including digital skill disparities, technological competence, privacy and security concerns, and the need for innovative pedagogical approaches. The paper proposes a comprehensive research agenda focusing on pedagogical design, professional development for educators, assessment and evaluation frameworks, long-term impact analysis, accessibility and inclusivity strategies, digital fatigue and mental health considerations, user experience optimisation, and data privacy and security. By offering a multi-faceted analysis and highlighting potential research directions, this paper aims to contribute to the development of equitable, engaging, and effective educational experiences in the rapidly-evolving metaverse landscape.
