The writings of James Graves and their historical significance

Abstract

The writings of Graves contain such a variety of significant information, concerned with personal and social as well as technical history that is easy to become distracted and unfocussed. He was an early member of the society of telegraph engineers and contributed many papers to its proceedings. Graves' contributions have received little attention since his death. As a first step towards rectifying this situation, a comprehensive list of the writings and publications that are located up to now is given in the appendix to this paper. Graves' own record shows 23 papers, which does not quite tally with what is listed here as published work. We now have a challenge to find any missing papers and undertake a long overdue technological reassessment.
