    Abstract

On the assumption that syntactic and lexical structure provides us with a means of identifying important features of the Weltanschauung of the language user, a number of art-historical texts have been investigated in an attempt to pinpoint apparent differences in the way in which English art historians on the one hand and German ones on the other view their objects of study. In general, the language of German art history presents art-objects in a much more dynamic way than English; this is not merely a question of metaphor but of basic syntactic properties of the two languages.
