Abstract

An overview of the overall architecture of the language component of an English-Text-to-Sign-Languages translation system1 is presented, focusing upon the translation of natural language text into a gesture-oriented interlingua representation. We report current progress in applying syntactic, semantic and discourse oriented natural language processing (NLP) techniques to generate the interlingua representation. In addition, an account is given of the provision for manual intervention in the text analysis stages to enhance quality of the translation when automatic techniques are insufficiently accurate.
