N2 - Summary: In this work, the methods of characterising charge transport in ionic liquids are reviewed. Deviations from the classical theory derived for molecular solvents are discussed in terms of the assumptions that become invalid in ionic media. It is proposed that the mechanism by which charge is transported in ionic liquids is different from that in molecular solvents or molten salts and it is using this criterion that the description of an ionic liquid can be based.
